Be Connected with Alexandrina Libraries

A new program is set to open the digital world to less tech-savvy older residents

Do you have family or friends overseas but feel daunted by modern digital communication channels? Or maybe you think it sounds convenient to pay bills online but aren’t too sure about the security of online banking?

An exciting new program is being offered by Alexandrina Libraries that will give older residents the opportunity to increase their confidence and skills in a variety of online applications.

Be Connected is a free Australian Government initiative helping Australians in the 50 plus age bracket and is available online and at libraries around the country. Alexandrina Libraries launched Be Connected at their Goolwa and Strathalbyn Libraries on 28 March.

The program offers face-to-face, one-on-one support from library staff and volunteers, who can sit down and work through the online program with interested participants.

Covering a broad range of relevant topics such as using a digital device, staying safe online, interacting via social media, shopping online and much more; the aim is to get every Australian online, regardless of their prior knowledge or experience using the internet.

Along with the personalised help offered at the Goolwa and Strathalbyn Libraries, there is also a Be Connected website that has a range of information and interactive training tools to help users work through the program in their own time and surroundings.

Alexandrina Council Mayor Keith Parkes said the program opens the digital world to a whole new demographic.

“The Be Connected program gives less tech savvy older people in our region the opportunity to learn new skills on their computers or mobile devices; which will in turn give them confidence and the benefits of utilising modern technology for their own convenience.

“Our library staff are ready to help those that need it, and the program is presented in such a way that the otherwise daunting task of understanding some of these concepts, is broken down and simplified.”

Be Connected is available now, both online and in person. If you or someone you know could benefit from this life changing program, call Alexandrina Council on 8555 7000 to book a session.
