2019 South Australian Wooden Boat Festival

Call for community committee members

The South Australian Wooden Boat Festival will return to Goolwa next year, and planning is well underway.

The 16th biennial festival will be held on 27 and 28 April 2019 at the Goolwa Wharf Precinct and the town will be ready to welcome the thousands of locals and visitors that come to experience the magic and nostalgia that accompany the event.

Alexandrina Council is seeking passionate volunteers to join the community committee who will once again bring the festival to life. The success of the South Australian Wooden Boat Festival is the result of the tremendous contribution of community members who volunteer their time and skills in the interest of providing a spectacle for boaties and non-boaties alike.

Alexandrina Mayor Keith Parkes recognises what the festival means to the region, and the hard work the committee does to bring it to fruition.

“The South Australian Wooden Boat Festival is a quintessential representation of Goolwa and the greater Alexandrina region. We have culture, heritage and amazing craftsmanship moulding together to create an event that brings people together to celebrate the great things that come with living in a historic riverside township” he said.

“Alexandrina Council is delighted to once again support our community committee who do an amazing job pulling together the various elements that make this festival an iconic part of the Alexandrina calendar. I would encourage anyone with a keen interest in event planning, boating or community participation to consider getting involved. The breadth of opportunities to contribute is vast.”

Established by a group of local boat enthusiasts in 1989, the event is Australia’s only freshwater wooden boat festival and its unique location at the end of the mighty Murray River, in a town steeped with boating tradition, sets the ideal scene. The mix of on-and-off water activities, local food and wine and gorgeous wooden boats is expected to attract in excess of 14,000 people in 2019.
