Milang Pump House Lease

The Milang and District Community Association Inc. seek a 21 year lease agreement with Council for the decommissioned SA Water Pump Station and surrounding land located over a portion of Lot 3, Section 75 Daranda Terrace Milang in Crown Record Volume 5753 Folio 691.

In 2014, the abandoned building captured the interest of the Milang and District Community Association Inc. who saw potential in transforming the building and grounds into a community recreational space. Given the local interest in retaining the building, SA Water and the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR) were supportive of the transfer of the building to the Council at nil cost in order for Council to lease or use the building for community purposes.

Between August 2016 and June 2017, the Milang and District Community Association Inc. considered the naming of the building and the most appropriate uses for the site. The Association undertook their own community consultation and at a meeting held on the 6 June 2017 at the Milang Institute, attended by over fifty residents, the building was named ‘Milang Pump House’ with future use of the site dedicated to water activities including hire and storage of canoes, as a centre for instruction on water safety, boat building (small craft, canoes and sailing dinghies) and historical information on the paddle steamers constructed in Milang in the 1800’s. Future initiatives also include developing the area around the building into a children’s playground incorporating a model paddles teamer commissioned by the Association in memory of the many paddle steamer’s constructed on the Milang foreshore.
