Goolwa

Goolwa

Australia's First Cittaslow Town.
Goolwa was once a thriving Riverport but now the boats carry tourists and its historic buildings have been restored as art galleries, cafes and B&B's. The town is a State Heritage area.

With both fresh and salt water, Goolwa is a mecca for the keen anglers and boating enthusiasts as a starting point for a day or multi-day trip into the Coorong National Park or the Lake Alexandrina area.

Goolwa offers a range of activities catering for the active through to those who would prefer to take your time and relax in a waterside cafe with morning tea and watch the activity unfold in front of you.

Hindmarsh Island

Captain Charles Sturt used Hindmarsh Island as the highest point to locate the mouth of the River Murray on his epic river journey in 1830.

Hindmarsh Island is unique as it faces fresh water on one side and salt water on the other - providing wonderful opportunities for birdwatchers and fishing enthusiasts.

Sail or canoe into the Coorong National Park for a closer look at some of this wonderful bird life, for fishing or just for relaxing. For those interested in local history, remnants of a small cheese factory, flour mill, schoolmasters residence and a school can be found on the island.
